 The black coral, also known as the yasser, is a colonial animal associated with sea anemones and stony coral reefs. It is named for its hard, black skeleton and the small spines on its surface, which distinguish it from other corals.

More than 150 species of black corals have been described, some of which are wire corals, growing in a single spiral, while many have a dendritic growth pattern, creating a fan-shaped or tree-like branching pattern. At least 14 species of black corals currently occur in Hawaii.
